Tim Kasher is set to release his debut solo album, The Game Of Monogamy, on October 5th, 2010 via Saddle Creek. Recorded this past January in Whitefish, MT, at SnowGhost Music and in his rental home in the small town, the album marks the first time Kasher has written, recorded, and produced an album under his own name.

The Game Of Monogamy is more of an arranged record than any of Kasher’s past releases, filled with theatrical arrangements and lush instrumentation to create his own blend of classic pop. Ornamented with strings, harp, oboe, flute, and trombone, among other instruments, the songs vary in sound from vibrant and catchy (“Cold Love,” “I’m Afraid I’m Gonna Die Here”) to sweeping and grand (“No Fireworks,” “Monogamy”), and from hushed and spare (“Strays,” “The Prodigal Husband”), to urgent and fraught (“A Grown Man,” “Bad, Bad Dreams”). This moody orchestral pop evokes a 1950s-esque, conservative atmosphere, setting the stage for a dilemma that remains thoroughly modern. The protagonist’s arc in The Game of Monogamy spans the wide range of distinctly human emotions tangled up around relationships in a starched shirt society. Call it the score for our collective sexual plight: expression routinely becomes repression in the name of romance.

Kasher enlisted Patrick Newbery (trumpet/keys for Cursive; also of Lacona and Head of Femur) to help with the arrangements, the production, and to play on the record. Friends Erin Tate (Minus The Bear) and Matt Maginn (Cursive) also stopped by to add some drum and bass parts, respectively, and members of the Glacier National Symphony were recruited for the classical instrument parts.

Follow Tim on Facebook & Twitter to stay in the loop!

All proceeds from the concerts go to the ACLU Nebraska who are currently preparing a law suit against the town of Fremont, Nebraska, the latest in a series of U.S. towns that have decided to take immigration law into their own hands. ACLU Nebraska will file a lawsuit challenging the law which attempts to ban undocumented immigrants from renting, residing or being employed in the Nebraska town.

ACLU Nebraska Executive Director Laurel Marsh says, “If this law goes into effect, it will cause discrimination and racial profiling against Latinos and others who appear to be foreign born, including U.S. citizens. The ACLU Nebraska has no option but to turn to the courts to stop this un-American and unconstitutional ordinance before the law goes into effect. Not only do local ordinances such as this violate federal law, they are also completely out of step with American values of fairness and equality. We will be working with concerned citizens in Fremont who want to stop Arizona-like laws from getting on the books in their city.”

Cursive has announced a new run of headlining dates next month, beginning November 24th at the Bottleneck in Lawrence, KS. The shows will continue into December and wrap up on the 13th at Lash’s 6th Annual Toy Drive at the Waiting Room in the band’s hometown of Omaha, NE.

The Toy Drive is an annual benefit show organized by Omaha musician Larry Dunn for the children of the Porcupine District of the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota, one of the most impoverished communities in the U.S. Gift donations will be accepted at the show and 100% of ticket proceeds will go toward buying additional gifts and holiday stockings. Tickets are $14 and go on sale this Saturday, October 17th.

Late last month, Cursive premiered their video for “Let Me Up” – the third single off their new album Mama, I’m Swollen – on Stereogum, who raved “…’Let Me Up’ runs next to the outstanding ‘From The Hips’ in terms of standouts from the band’s sixth album, but it is simply unparalleled in the band’s career for the transcendence of this Evan Glodell-directed video. In fact, as far as transcendence goes, it’s probably the most transcendent video you’ve seen in a while.” Check out the video here.

About Lash’s 6th Annual Toy Drive:

Since 2003, Omaha rockabilly musician Larry Dunn has organized a toy drive for the children of the Porcupine District of the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota. According to the 2000 census, Pine Ridge’s Lakota Sioux community is one of the most poverty stricken communities in the United States. The children of the reservation are desperately in need of some sunshine and cheer, especially during a time of cold, harsh winds and immense desolation like winters on the reservation can be. The majority of gifts for the children are collected at benefit concerts put on by Omaha-area musicians. Every dime raised goes toward buying additional gifts and stockings. http://www.myspace.com/lashlaruetoydrive
